Guides, Policies, and Forms

Interdisciplinary & Professional Studies (IPS) Handbook - The IPS Handbook is a condensed version of the Graduate Student Handbook, applicable to all Master's degree programs administered by the Office of Interdisciplinary and Professional Studies.

Graduate Student Handbook - The handbook describes policies and procedures pertaining to the Graduate School and graduate study at the University of Miami that are set forth in the Academic Bulletin.

Academic Bulletin - The bulletin contains extensive information about various university programs, policies, procedures and other important information. 

Academic Calendar - Students should refer to the University of Miami Academic Calendar for important dates and deadlines throughout the academic year.

Graduate Student Honor Code - The ethical blueprint for graduate studies throughout the university. This booklet outlines the process for the investigation and determination of Honor Code violations.

Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook - This handbook is the basis for our standards of conduct. These policies help us ensure a consistent and efficient approach when handling student conduct cases.

Graduate School FormsThe Graduate School uses Dynamic Forms to process requests by graduate students to the Graduate School.

Clearance Process for Graduation - Once a student applies for graduation, the student's graduate department approves the application to then be reviewed by the Graduate School. The Graduate School then reviews and clears approved students for degree conferral by the Office of the Registrar. 

Campus Resources

Graduate School: A resource for graduate students, providing guidance for program offerings, admissions guidelines, dissertation editing and electronic submission, and career preparation.

Office of the University Registrar The Office of the Registrar is charged with the overall responsibility for activities relating to course registration, students’ academic records, course scheduling and enrollment and academic systems maintenance.

Student Account Services: Responsible for the processing of all financial information related to student accounts during their enrollment at the University of Miami.

Student Health Service: Provides primary care clinical services and specialty services such as women's health, travel visits and allergy injections. 

Living Off Campus: The Office of Housing and Residential Life created a webpage for students in need of off-campus housing because on-campus housing is only offered to full-time degree-seeking undergraduates. 

Parking and Transportation: Responsible for the overall management of parking facilities, traffic control and meeting the transportation needs of the Coral Gables campus.

Cane Card: This is an on-campus student identification card. The Cane Card is used to provide access to facilities like the library or the Patti & Allen Herbert Wellness Center. It can also be used to control lending priveliges as the library or U-Print services. 

CaneLink: This is the university's student information system. It is used to search for classes, view course schedules, sign up for course wait-lists and more.

BlackboardThe Blackboard Course Management system automatically provides a course web site for every course at the University of Miami. Students and faculty are automatically enrolled in their course web sites.

Student Technology Helpdesk: A free computer support center for students. The Student Technology Helpdesk provides a multitude of services including internet configuration, virus and spyware removal, system restorations, software installations and upgrades on laptops, desktops, smartphones, and tablets. 

University of Miami Libraries: University Miami Libraries is comprised of six libraries across three campuses. The University of Miami Libraries (UML) rank among the top 50 research libraries in North America with a collection of 3.75 million volumes (including 910,300 e-books) and 104,330 current serial subscriptions (including 102,726 electronic journals). 

University of Miami Bookstore: All of your textbooks and course materials can be found at the university's bookstore. You will also be able to find UM apparel and technology items at the bookstore as well.

Toppel Career CenterThe Toppel Career Center helps you every step along your path to career success. Whether you’re looking to solidify your interests, to get ready for a job or internship interview, or to make connections that will launch your career, Toppel is your resource.

ASPIRE - The mission of ASPIRE is to cultivate, facilitate and promote internships for students throughout the College of Arts & Sciences. ASPIRE partners with agencies, communities, and organizations in Miami, nationally, and worldwide to match students in educationally enriching internships.

Writing CenterThe Writing Center at the University of Miami offers free, one-on-one assistance with all types of writing concerns.  Located at the University of Miami Learning Commons in Richter Library, the Writing Center can help you at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to final revisions. 

UPrintUPrint is the wireless and networked student printing solution for students at the University of Miami. It is a user-friendly application based on the “Green U” initiative and should encourage responsible printing and copying. 

Graduate Student Association: The University of Miami's Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) is a student governed body  committed to improving the quality of life for all UM graduate and medical students, from hosting recreational events to petitioning for health insurance discounts.

  • Graduate Student Lounge: Room 208 in the Shalala Student Center.
  • Graduate Study Room: Room 212 on the second floor of the Richter Library.
  • GSA Office: Room 2300C in the Whitten University Center. Here, graduate students may print and copy for free (100-page limit per student).

Donna E. Shalala Student CenterThe Shalala Student Center (SC) includes a 24-hour study space, student organization offices and lounge spaces, a Grand Ballroom, a Senate Room, multi-use meeting and activities rooms, and a media suite. 

Norman A. Whitten University CenterThe Whitten Univeristy Center (UC) is the site of eFollett Campus Store, Mac Campus Store, USPS Post Office, and an outdoor double Olympic-sized pool. Several eating establishments are located in the UC including: Hurricane Food Court, Lime Restaurant, Outtakes Convenience Store, The Corner Deli, and the Faculty Club.

Patti & Allen Herbert Wellness CenterUniversity of Miami students who are registered for at least one credit during the semester are eligible for membership to the Herbert Wellness Center . The fee varies each academic year. The fee is automatically charged to full-time graduate students. Graduate students interested in waiving the fee should visit the wellness center website for more information.

Campus PoliceThe University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) has actively worked to maximize the safety and security of the Coral Gables campus for over 45 years. UMPD supports the University’s mission through proactive community-policing efforts and 24/7 patrol by highly-skilled and experienced officers. UMPD also offers continuous crime prevention and safety programming for the University Community.

Directed Independent Language Study (DILS): The DILS program is an opportunity for students to learn a language not currently offered within the traditional university curriculum. The program is open to all currently enrolled University of Miami students. The program is free. Students who complete the final language competency exam will have the program noted on their official transcript. 

Campus Life

Ring Theatre - The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre is located on the University of Miami's Coral Gables campus. The theatre is under the arm of the Department of Theatre Arts and is named after UM alumnus and Tony® award-winning Broadway composer and lyricist, Jerry Herman.

Lowe Art Museum - An integral part of the University of Miami, the Lowe Art Museum offers its diverse audiences opportunities and resources for engaging with contemporary culture through 5,000 years of human creativity.

Frost Music Live - Frost Music Live includes the Signature Series, an unparalleled offering of 24 concerts featuring top GRAMMY®, Emmy®, and Tony® award-winning and nominated guest artists, collaborating with the esteemed highly acclaimed Frost School of Music faculty artists and students.

Hurricane Athletics - Buy Miami Hurricanes tickets and get the latest news, highlights, rosters, schedules, stats, scores, and videos for the Canes.

The Rathskeller - The Rathskeller (also known as the Rat) is UM's on campus pub. From live bands and Trivia Tuesdays, to Hurricane Sports Watch Parties and entertaining student programs, the Rathskeller has something for everyone at the U!
