Dual Degrees

The Master of Arts in International Administration (MAIA) program offers students the opportunity to earn a second master's degree during their time at the University of Miami. The MAIA program has two dual degree programs available. Students interested in pursuing a dual degree are strongly encouraged to review the admissions requirements for both programs, the curriculum, and the time commitment required to complete a dual degree program. MD dual degree programs are only open to individuals who have already been admitted to the University of Miami's Doctor of Medicine program at the Miller School of Medicine.

M.A. in International Administration + Master of Public Health

    The Master of Arts in International Administration/Master in Public Health (MAIA/MPH) degree is offered jointly by the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences and the Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Public Health Sciences. The International Administration degree with a second master’s degree in Public Health is designed for students who seek an in-depth knowledge of public health with a broader emphasis in globalization and health, international health, international health policy and international development.

  • Admissions

    Applicants must be admitted into the MAIA and MPH Programs on a separate basis, based on the admissions requirements and procedure of each individual program. Acceptance by one program does not in any way indicate or guarantee acceptance by the other degree program. Both the MAIA and the MPH degree programs require the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) as part of the admissions requirements. For students whose native language is not English, successful completion the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination is required.

    Program Total Credit Hours: 60

    Average Program Duration: 2.5 years

    The total requirements for the MAIA/MPH program are 60 credits. These requirements include 30 MPH credits and 30 MAIA credits. Students must be enrolled in both programs concurrently each semester (fall and spring) to avoid being discounted from either program.

The International Administration degree with a second master’s degree in Public Administration is designed for students who seek in-depth management skills essential to public and nonprofit organizations oriented towards a diverse metropolitan environment, as well as a deeper understanding of how governments and non-governmental organizations work together in international settings.

M.A. in International Administration + Certificate in Security Management + Doctor of Medicine

    The Master of Arts in International Administration/Doctor of Medicine (MAIA/MD) degree is offered jointly by the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences and the Miller School of Medicine. 

    MD/MAIA candidates also receive a Certificate in Security Management, which is designed to prepare students to meet the various multidimensional security challenges that have faced our planet in the last two decades: from the aftermath of 9/11 to the most recent crisis of COVID-19.  For future physicians, understanding the sociocultural and geopolitical threats posed by violent human actions, trafficking, migration, natural disasters, and pandemics, is essential.

  • Admission

    This degree is only open to individuals already enrolled in the MD program, beginning MAIA in the Spring of their first year of medical school. MD students should apply prior to December 1st during their first year of medical school.

    MAIA Credit Hours: 30 credits

    Average Program Duration: 4 years

    The program is designed to be completed simultaneously within the required 4 years of medical school.

Certificate in Security Management + Doctor of Medicine

    For MD students who prefer a condensed offering to the MD/MAIA program, the MAIA program also offers a joint MD/Certificate in Security Management program in partnership with the Miller School of Medicine.

    The MD/Certificate in Security Management program only requires 15 credits, instead of the 30 credits required by the M.A. in International Administration. Please note, the certificate program is not eligible for federal or state financial aid. Contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment for further assistance.

  • Admission

    Both the MD and the Certificate in Security Management can be completed in four years, with some of the Security Management courses being offered online.  No thesis or practicum is required for this dual program pathway.

    Security Management Credit Hours: 15 credits

    Average Program Duration: 4 years

    The program is designed to be completed simultaneously within the required 4 years of medical school.
